Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry announced on Thursday that Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh received the first British flight after Britain lifted a four-year ban on flights to the Red Sea resort.
The ministry informed that the first direct British flight with 110 passengers onboard, departed from Birmingham, London.
The British Embassy in Cairo announced that the British government had removed its advisory against flying to Sharm el-Sheikh earlier in October.
After the Islamic State bombing brought down a Russian passenger plane in October 2015 the ban was in place and saw 224 dead.
After the attack , Russia, which is a major source of tourists to Egypt suspended all direct flights to Egypt. Last year all the direct flights were resumed to Cairo but the direct flights to the popular Red Sea resort was yet to be resumed.
All the international security measures and safety standards were applied in the Egyptian airports and were further working to improve services for customers said Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Younis al-Masry said in a statement.
He went on saying that the ministry was keen to cooperate with other agencies to increase inbound and outbound travel considering that the aviation sector is one of the most important sectors contributing to the national economy.
For Egypt tourism is a main source of income and it created 13 billion U.S. dollars’ revenues in 2010 alone, when some 14.7 million tourists visited the country.
The Central Bank of Egypt commented that following years of recession, the tourism sector has been recovering, earning about 12.6 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2018/2019 as compared with 9.8 billion dollars in the previous fiscal year.
