British Airways is to leave its own terminal at New York’s JFK airport and move in with its alliance partner, American Airlines. The move from Terminal 7 to 8 will take place in 2022.

British airways and the airport owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey together are injecting £250m in Terminal 8 to recreate and customize it. There will be additional stands, improved baggage systems and new lounges.

British Airways has occupied the Terminal for 7 decades along with the Concorde era and is the only non-US airline to have a terminal at New York’s premier airport. It also shared the terminal with sister airline, Iberia and others. BA is the only non-US airline to have a terminal at the JFK airport.

To accommodate a much expanded presence for the home town airline, jetBlue  Terminal 7 will be demolished.

Another £52m will be pumped in by the British Airways into the existing facility to provide brand new lounges for First and Club World customers and an upgraded customer experience for all the customers.

BA’s chairman and chief executive, Alex Cruz is looking forward to work with the Port Authority and American Airlines to continue building a world-class transatlantic travel experience from 2022.

It is expected that the move will be making the connections easier between British Airways’ transatlantic services and American Airlines’ domestic links.

The switch between BA and AA will get easier without changing terminals and Virgin Atlantic has already co-sited with partner, Delta in JFK Terminal 4.

Air France has launched a beauty treatment centre in the terminal 1 lounge at the New York JFK.
