Storm Herminia has brought fresh chaos to travel across the UK, intensifying the disruptions caused by Storm Éowyn just days earlier. Major airlines, including British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Emirates, and United, have faced significant delays and cancellations, while rail operators like ScotRail, Great Western Railway, and Transport for Wales are struggling with fallen trees, flooding, and debris on tracks. Together, these back-to-back storms have left thousands of travelers stranded, with severe weather conditions continuing to impact flights, rail services, and road travel nationwide.

Storm Herminia Brings Widespread Travel Disruption Across the UK and Europe

Storm Herminia has swept across the UK and Europe, causing significant travel disruption for thousands of passengers. Strong winds, heavy rains, and widespread flooding have severely impacted flights, rail services, and road travel, leaving passengers scrambling to rebook and adjust plans.

Chaos at London Heathrow

London Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport, has been heavily affected by the storm. Today, 56 flights have been delayed, and 31 flights have been canceled. Air-traffic controllers were forced to reduce the “flow rate” of aircraft movements due to high winds, leading to cancellations and knock-on delays.

British Airways, which dominates Heathrow, canceled 26 flights, including domestic services to Belfast City and Edinburgh and international routes to Barcelona, Berlin, Zurich, and other European destinations. Other airlines, such as Aer Lingus, Iberia, KLM, and Lufthansa, also canceled flights, adding to the chaos.

Passengers whose flights are canceled are entitled to rebooking on the next available flight—on any airline—as well as meal vouchers and hotel accommodations until they reach their destination. Airlines are working to rebook travelers, though availability remains limited due to the volume of disruptions.

Disruption at Amsterdam Schiphol

Amsterdam Schiphol, another major European hub, is also experiencing severe weather-related issues. Today, 50 flights have been delayed, and 9 flights have been canceled. With both major hubs under pressure, passengers traveling through Europe are urged to check for updates and allow extra time for their journeys.

Storm Herminia Causes Travel Chaos at Major European Airports

Storm Herminia continues to wreak havoc across Europe, with London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schiphol among the worst-affected airports. High winds and heavy rain have led to widespread delays and cancellations, impacting thousands of travelers. Both airports have seen a significant reduction in flight operations as airlines scramble to manage disruptions and rebook passengers. Here’s a breakdown of the delays and cancellations caused by the severe weather as per Flightaware:

Rail Services Grind to a Halt

The storm has also caused havoc for rail passengers in the UK, with fallen trees, flooding, and other debris disrupting services across the network.

While some progress has been made, such as the reopening of the West Coast Main Line connecting London Euston and southern Scotland, significant delays and disruptions continue across the network.

Weather Warnings and Impacts

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for wind and rain across much of southern England, Wales, and parts of the Midlands. Storm Herminia has brought gusts of up to 70mph in coastal areas and heavy rainfall, with 20mm to 70mm expected in some regions.

The saturated ground in Wales and southern England has raised concerns about flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. The strong winds also pose a risk of damage to buildings, fallen trees, and further transport disruption.

Impact Beyond the UK

Storm Herminia originated in Spain, where it caused significant damage with strong winds and heavy rains. France also experienced severe flooding, with buildings and cars submerged in parts of the country.

Travelers Urged to Stay Updated

With severe weather continuing to disrupt travel, passengers are advised to monitor updates from airlines, rail operators, and weather agencies. National Rail recommends checking schedules before traveling, especially for services operated by ScotRail, Transport for Wales, and CrossCountry.

For flight passengers, ongoing delays and cancellations at Heathrow and Schiphol mean flexibility and advance planning are essential. As Storm Herminia continues to impact large parts of the UK and Europe, disruption is expected to persist for several days.
