cambodiaThe top tourist attractions of Cambodia expect a record number of tourists this Khmer New Year, with as many as 2.5 million domestic as well as international tourists travelling to this part of the world to revel in the festive spirit around the nation.

According to a Tourist Ministry report, this Siem Reap province had lured in nearly 1.7 million tourists marking an increase of 23% from last year.

The Angkor Sangkranta event and Angkor Archaeological Park is known to attract the maximum number of tourists. Out of the visitors to Siem Reap, about 1.6 million were domestic tourists and 31,800 were foreign travellers.

The ministry report estimates that the tourism in Siem Reap had been able to generate an income of about $95 million over the holiday.

And, added that the local tourists had spent at least $50 a day and foreigners up to $500.

The province of Preah Sihanouk that is one of the four coastal areas of the countries have witnessed a 10% rise in the tourist arrivals as compared to the previous Khmer New Year that welcomed about 143,597 people.

The director of Preah Sihanouk tourism department named Taing Sochetkrisna, said that the number of tourists had risen on account of stronger infrastructure connections and new attractions in the area.

Mr. Sochetkrisna said that locals and also foreigners are keen to visit islands in the province since the transport services from the mainland are currently available.

Ahead of the Khmer New Year holiday, the Tourism Ministry had called on all the service providers not to increase the prices and also treat customers fairly. But then, they argued that they do intend to charge a premium, saying that it is a standard practice to charge a hefty amount during the peak season.

Ho Vandy, the secretary-general of Cambodia National Tourism Alliance said that the efforts of the ministry to resist overcharging has truly enabled the boosting of tourism revenues over the holiday.

Mr. Vandy said that the presence of a large number of tourist attractions and better transport connections have also helped the tourism sector of the country to progress.

He has called for more investment in the local tourism sector with an aim to upgrade the service on offer to visitors and also boost the local as well and foreign tourism in this country.
