In 2025, Cambodia reported a considerable 16.9% drop in international tourist arrivals. 2025 tourism figures showed a reported 5.57 million tourists compared to 2024, which had 6.7 million. The primary reason for this decline was the conflict at the Cambodia-Thailand border. Military clashes have been reported in the Battambang and Siem Reap provinces, which have affected travel during the peak high season in December.

Despite the downturn, the Cambodian government remains positive about future tourism growth. The situation is being framed as a temporary setback, however, officials have outlined potential strategies to fast track the recovery tourism is hoped to achieve by 2026. These efforts are aimed at restoring the sector’s growth potential as Cambodia’s economy is reliant on the tourism sector.

The Impact of Border Tensions on Regional Tourism and Visitor Confidence

The downturn in Cambodia’s tourism performance was exacerbated by the military conflicts in December, which directly impacted key tourism areas and led to trip cancellations, travel warnings, and disruptions for travelers who had already booked their flights, hotels, and tour packages. Cambodia-Thailand border tensions caused considerable uncertainty, particularly during the crucial high season, when international tourists traditionally flock to Cambodia to explore its world-famous heritage sites and bustling cities.

Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), noted that the country’s annual tourist arrivals fell short of the projected targets. “The clashes had a major impact on the sector, with tourism cancellations and a growing sense of fear among international tourists. This was especially noticeable during the critical December period, which normally sees a surge in visitors,” Sivlin stated.

Regional Tourism Competition and Cambodia’s Recovery Efforts

Beyond the border conflict, regional competition from neighboring destinations like Vietnam and Thailand also played a role in the overall decline in Cambodia’s tourism. In 2025, Cambodia saw a reduction in Vietnamese visitors (down 8.8%) and a steep decline in visitors from Thailand (down 52.4%), marking a noticeable shift in regional tourism patterns.

However, Cambodia remains focused on long-term tourism growth. According to the MoT, the country is implementing targeted initiatives to diversify its tourism offerings and strengthen market engagement, particularly with key partners such as China and Vietnam. China recorded an impressive 41.5% increase in visitors to Cambodia in 2025, highlighting the opportunities for further growth in this market.

Strategic Focus on Tourism Growth for 2026 and Beyond

Looking ahead to 2026, Cambodian officials are confident that targeted recovery measures will help the country rebuild its tourism sector and attract more international visitors. Key strategies will include expanding air connectivity through Techo International Airport, engaging in cross-border tourism initiatives, and strengthening ties with emerging tourism markets in Asia.

The Ministry of Tourism also plans to focus on community-based tourism, which has proven to be a sustainable way to ensure that tourism benefits are more widely distributed across Cambodia’s rural areas. This approach will not only improve the economic contributions of tourism but also support local livelihoods, creating new opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

Efforts to promote safe tourism destinations, even amid regional security concerns, are already underway. Tourism officials are committed to rebuilding tourists’ confidence and positioning Cambodia as a safe, attractive destination for both leisure and business tourism. As the Cambodian tourism sector focuses on these recovery measures, it aims to reach its original goal of welcoming 7 million visitors in 2026, with particular emphasis on sustainable tourism practices and inclusive growth.

Strengthening Cambodia’s Tourism Brand Through Strategic Initiatives

The Cambodian government is also prioritizing destination branding and collaborative partnerships with both regional and international tourism bodies to expand its global footprint. By aligning with the ASEAN tourism network and strengthening tourism collaborations with neighboring countries, Cambodia aims to improve intra-regional travel and attract more international tourists seeking unique cultural and historical experiences in Southeast Asia.

Targeted marketing campaigns and engagement with global tourism platforms will also help Cambodia recover and grow. By leveraging digital platforms and new media channels, Cambodia is positioning itself as a premium destination in Southeast Asia for tourists seeking cultural heritage, nature-based tourism, and eco-friendly travel.

Cambodia’s Resilient Tourism Sector Poised for Recovery and Future Growth

2025 brought many challenges to Cambodia, but as issues with borders and competition from other countries arose, the Cambodian government focused on sustainable tourism. The Cambodian government has poured their efforts into establishing a sustainable tourism sector, and it can easily be predicted that in 2026 there will be a tourism boom in the country.

With the development of tourism infrastructure, Cambodia has also established and fostered global partnerships that assist with the diversification of the country’s tourism market. The development and diversification of the tourism sector will greatly benefit the local communities in Cambodia. As the fast-paced changes to the Cambodian tourism sector take place, the efforts will also relay the message that Cambodia is a leading tourism destination in South East Asia. The sustainable tourism sector will provide a high quality experience for travelers, while also offering economic value to the local communities, that will be a great to the country.
