The countdown for the position of the UNWTO Secretary-General which is slated in May this year has already started with more candidates in the pipeline. Among the top possible candidates are: Dr. Walter Mzembi, Zimbabwe’s Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili of Georgia, Marcio Favilla Lucca de Paula of Brazil, Mrs. Gloria Guevara of Mexico, Mr. Alain St. Ange of Seychelles and Mr. Lahcen Haddad of Morocco.
Dr. Mzembi launched his campaign last year with endorsements from Sadc and the African Union and will no doubt face big challenges along the way. His biggest challenges will, however, be Marcio Favilla Lucca de Paula of Brazil, the current UNWTO executive director for operational programmes and institutional relations and second-in-charge of the UNWTO. Even the outgoing UNWTO Secretary-General Dr. Taleb Rifai stood for him a year before the election. On January 19th, there would be much excitement in Madrid, when Dr. Mzembi and Marcio Paula will be holding campaign dinners concurrently at 7 p.m. for attracting audiences at Fitur, the Spanish international tourism show. This will be a show of power and will be interesting to note which dignitaries will attend which function and which function Dr. Rifai will attend.
