Carnival Cruises U.K. recently announced a major furlough of existing employees in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the cruise industry. Simon Palethorpe, President, Carnival Cruises said in a statement that alongside harshly affecting the holidays of guests, the coronavirus pandemic has also impacted every part of the business.

He mentioned that the pandemic has also effected the future deployment, guest experience, supply chain as well as people onboard and on the shore. As a result, the company had to undertake some critical decisions to ensure that the cruise business can be sustained and protected for the future. He informed that a third of the cruise line’s shore based staff has been furloughed following a period of collective consultation and another significant proportion will also be laid-off.

He shared that the authorities are devastated to take this action which will affect numerous talented and dedicated colleagues and said that though it is a very difficult and unsettling time for everyone, the company has followed a clear and fair consultation process and considered all individual suggestions for new ways of working.

He further informed that cruise operations are paused at the moment but the company is also working at the highest levels to develop a comprehensive restart program to phase the ships back into service with enhanced and approved protocols that will keep everyone on board well and still give guests an amazing holiday.
