Chaliyar River Paddle 2021 successfully concludes and focuses on tourism in Indian state Kerala

Over 110 water sports enthusiasts participated in the Chaliyar River Paddle 2021, organised by Jellyfish Watersports in association with Kerala Tourism. The 68 km paddle started from Nilambur was flagged off by Mattummal Saleem – Chairman Nilambur Municipality. The main objective of this event was to help boost tourism and attract tourists to Kerala especially in the Malabar region post-COVID pandemic. The event concluded at Beypore in Kozhikode district, where the river meets with the Arabian Sea.

Commander (Dr.) Abhilash Tomy, KC, NM a retired Indian naval officer and yachtsman, District Collector Narasimhugari T L Reddy IAS, Aswini Pratap – Beypore Port Officer, and Coast Guard Commandant Francis and his team were part of the three-day paddling event. Beypore International Water Fest, an event by the Kerala Tourism department, a curtain-raiser for Chaliyar River Paddle 2021 was held on day one just before the flag-off event.

Chaliyar River Paddle 2021 was a plastic negative event, as the paddlers went plastic-free for three days and moreover helped clean the river while they paddled. The whole idea was to promote water sports like kayaking, Stand up Paddle (SUPing), and sailing as it helps build the connection with the water bodies, turning more and more youngsters and tourists into evangelists of clean waters. Clearing up plastic and garbage from the river is just one thing, but what made the real difference is rejecting plastic altogether.

This year various human-powered watercraft were used such as kayaks, canoes, stand up paddles, scull rowers, rafts, and sailboats. Apart from the exciting journey on the water, the campsite was the perfect place to unwind and bond with fellow paddlers. Also, the participants got a peek into the culture through authentic Kerala delicacies and local music.
