The restoration work of Chamundi Hills’ ropeway project which got stopped for years because of opposition from various quarters has left the stakeholders at odds in Mysuru.

Even though the hospitality and tourism industry have greeted the initiation considering that a project once completed will be a big advantage to Mysuru, making it a tourist centre. However, the environmentalists have emphasized the negatives and the way the project could ruin Chamundi Hills surrounding and beauty and cause deforestation.

Last week, the State Budget was presented by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. He mentioned that ropeway to Chamundi Hills would be proposed under the Centre’s Parvat Mala scheme. Even though no funds have been allotted whatsoever, it has re-invigorated the debate on the possibility of the completeness of the project.

The members of Federation of Organisations and Associations of Mysuru where various stakeholder groups including representatives from travel and tourism sector, hospitality sector, chambers of commerce etc are there have supported the move. They have said that once completed, it will help add novelty to Mysuru and attract more tourists to the city. Also, to the project, Mysuru MP, Mr. Pratap Simha, has expressed his support and praised the Government.

To quote Dr. Bhamy V Shenoy, social activist and founder of Mysore Grahakara Parishat, ‘’Why should there be a new attraction when we have so many attractions already? It is like arguing that Agra needs new attraction to promote tourism other than the Taj Mahal’’, remarked.
