A new tourism record was set by Chicago as it welcomed more than 57.6 million visitors in 2018 showing a growth of 4.3 per cent as compared to the same period last year.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said that when it comes to attracting tourists and business travellers, Chicago can go toe-to-toe with any city in the world.
New jobs and economic possibilities are being created as they continue to set new records and bring millions more to Chicago every year.
Choose Chicago’s annual visitors projections mentioned that there was a growth of 4.4 per cent in domestic visitors and an increase of 2.9 percent in overseas visitors.
David Whitaker, president of Choose Chicago felt encourages to not only see growth but also the pace.
Visitor volume grew 2.7 per cent than the previous year and the 4.3 per cent annual increase was a reflection of the momentum that Chicago was enjoying.
A variety of key barometers demonstrate the overall impact of the visitor industry.
Since 2011 more than 22,000 new tourism-related have been added and the Chicago tourism-related employment is estimated to have reached 150,616 jobs in 2018.This shows an increase of 1.2 per cent.
The hotel room demand by visitors last year grew 4.2 per cent and seven additional hotels opened in Chicago in 2018. For 2018 the overall annual occupancy rate increased to 75.4 per cent.
Whitaker said that the diversity of the visitors continues to grow as they welcome more and more people both from the US and around the world.
