Daxing International airport, the world’s biggest single-building airport terminal has opened in Beijing and is set to welcome 72 million travellers a year by 2025.

The 700,000 sqm airport from the above it looks like a dramatic, sprawling starfish and work on the building started five years ago. The  inauguration ceremony of £50bn project was attended by President Xi Jinping on September 25,2019.

It is designed by the architect Zaha Hadid before she died in 2016. The Chinese capital’s second mega-project has followed the footsteps of Beijing Capital International Airport and has joined the elite band of cities like London, Paris, Tokyo and New York having long-haul international airports.

There are five connected concourses that serves four runways in the unusual terminal building.

With a capacity for 100 million passengers annually by 2040 the plans are already afoot to expand it to the eight runways.

The journey from security to the furthest gate is just 600m despite the expansive design. There is a central atrium supported by eight C-shaped columns each having a 106, wide skylight at the top.

From downtown Beijing the airport is just 30 miles south of it which indicated that the rail and road links had to be constructed to connect it to proper city.

This afternoon the first commercial flight from the airport took off this afternoon which was the China Southern Airlines bound for Gunagdong in the south. After this six flights followed it.
