China sees rise in temple tourism

China is currently experiencing a huge rise in temple tourism as hundreds of young enthusiasts are flocking to all the Buddhist shrines every weekend to relax from every day worries and stresses, Colombo Gazette reported.


As per the data from travel platforms, bookings in recent months for temple tourism have tripled on an annual basis, with young minds ordering half of those numbers.


According to Ctrip information, from February 2023, almost 50 per cent of the people who booked their online tickets for temple tourism comprise young enthusiasts after the nineties turning as the main strength of temple tourism. The data also points out that ticket booking for temples have grown by 310 per cent year-on-year.


Many believers among young Chinese people are looking for a provisional run away from the anxieties related to personal or professional life as they have discovered a novel method to slow down from the daily crush and enjoy in these religious sites, as per the local media reports, reported Colombo Gazette.


In 2023, searches in terms of temple visits have increased by 580 per cent as per an online marketing service provider – Ocean Engine. On Xiaohongshu, the lifestyle platform, there have been more than 820,000 temple visitors posting their tips on travelling to worshipping etiquette and considering the tour as a “heart-cleansing experience”.


The Lama Temple is a Buddhist worship site in Beijing. It witnessed an average of more than 40,000 visitors last week on a daily basis.
