China spends US$258bn, leads outbound tourism

According to United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO),  China consolidated its leadership by remaining the biggest spender on travel abroad in 2017 with an expenditure of US$258bn.

A total spent of US$135bn is being spent by Chinese holidaymakers, this is nearly twice than the second largest outbound tourism contributor – the United States, and four times than that of the third-ranked Germany which spends US$84bn.

The Madrid based tourism agency mentioned that due to a surge in the global economy and the strong continued demand by the people, outbound tourism had  a strong growth in 2017 while all the source markets reported higher spending.

Last year the US tourist expenditure increased by nine percent as compared to 2016. China had increased by 5 , while Russia and Brazil reported 13 and 20 % respectively.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, referring to countries including Brazil, Russia, India and China stated that the emerging economies play a vital role in tourism development.

China Tourism Academy and Ctrip, one of China’s leading travel agencies, March’s report the number of Chinese travelling abroad has reached 130 million for the first time in 2017.
For ten nations China has become the largest international tourist source.  This includes Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Anatartica as per the report.
