In a decisive effort to strengthen its footprint in China, Choice Hotels International has officially entered into a master franchise agreement with SSAW Hotels and Resorts. This strategic alliance will see the introduction of 68 hotels into the renowned Ascend Collection, a brand known for its refined, upscale experiences. The move is considered a pivotal step in Choice Hotels’ roadmap to expand deeply within the Chinese travel and lodging landscape.
As part of this venture, SSAW’s current portfolio, which includes more than 9,500 rooms across existing brands like Pagoda, Narada Grand, SSAW Boutique, and Ginlan Jia, will undergo a significant rebranding effort. These properties will be upgraded and reintroduced to align with the Ascend Collection’s premium standards, creating a fresh, international appeal for travelers inside and outside of China.
Rebranding Timeline and Future Goals
The rebranding process is scheduled to be finalized by the fall of 2025. Once completed, these transformed properties will be listed and bookable through Choice Hotels’ global platform, opening access to a broader range of customers. Travelers enrolled in the Choice Privileges loyalty program will be able to earn and redeem points at these new locations, adding value for return guests.
The partnership extends beyond the Ascend Collection. SSAW Hotels has obtained exclusive rights as a master franchisee to develop two additional Choice brands—Comfort and Quality—within China. The companies have announced an ambitious plan to launch 100 new hotels under these two banners over the next five years, which will significantly boost their presence and influence in the Chinese lodging market.
Reimagining Brand Identity and Development Efficiency

Recognizing the shifting expectations of modern travelers, Choice Hotels has been proactive in revamping its Ascend Collection branding. This revamp reflects a commitment to innovation and growth, especially as the brand has rapidly expanded its portfolio, now encompassing over 180,000 rooms worldwide.
This renewal is part of a larger strategy aimed at helping franchisees optimize their investments. In March 2025, new prototype designs for the Comfort and Country Inn & Suites brands were introduced. These designs promise a 10–15% reduction in construction costs, easing the financial burden on developers and enabling more agile growth. At the same time, the refreshed branding offers greater clarity and distinction, helping these properties stand out in a competitive market.
Asia Pacific Expansion and Global Vision
In the broader Asia Pacific region, Choice Hotels currently operates more than 300 hotels, offering over 25,000 rooms. This presence is part of a well-structured effort to grow globally, especially beyond its already strong foundation in the United States.
A key area of focus is Australia, which ranks as the second-largest source of inbound tourists to China. In 2024, Australian visitors made 829,000 trips to China, contributing USD 8.1 billion in travel spending. Encouraging these travelers to choose the newly transformed Ascend Collection properties will be a major focus moving forward. By tapping into Australia’s outbound travel market, Choice Hotels hopes to generate consistent occupancy and brand loyalty.
Global Travel Industry Outlook
The alliance between Choice Hotels and SSAW Hotels and Resorts is expected to reshape the travel experience for many international visitors to China. By incorporating globally recognized brands into one of the world’s most dynamic travel markets, the collaboration is set to raise the bar in terms of service quality and guest experience.
Travelers—whether business professionals, holidaymakers, or domestic tourists—will now have access to more upscale and familiar lodging options, fostering a sense of comfort and reliability even in unfamiliar destinations. The consistency and quality associated with international hotel chains are expected to appeal especially to those accustomed to premium accommodations and brand loyalty perks.
One major component of this new offering is the Choice Privileges program. By integrating this loyalty scheme into the Chinese market, Choice Hotels not only enhances the guest experience but also incentivizes repeat stays. With travelers earning rewards across a broad global network, the appeal of sticking with Choice Hotels becomes even stronger.
Additionally, the move reflects a larger trend within China toward adopting international standards in the tourism and hospitality sector. As the country continues to promote quality tourism infrastructure, this partnership underscores a growing openness to global best practices, bringing structure, trust, and scalability to a rapidly evolving market.
The collaboration between Choice Hotels and SSAW Hotels and Resorts stands as a bold and forward-thinking step in the evolution of the Chinese hospitality industry. With the planned rollout of 168 properties across three major brands and the strategic inclusion of loyalty programs and cost-effective development, this initiative is expected to reshape the travel experience for both domestic and international guests.
Ultimately, this venture is more than just a business agreement—it’s a sign of shifting tides in the global travel industry, where partnerships, standardization, and international quality are becoming the new norm in previously fragmented markets like China. The travel industry worldwide will be watching closely, as this development may very well serve as a blueprint for similar expansions in other fast-growing markets.
