Local state of emergency was declared by Louisiana and Mississippi and people were asked to evacuate the coastal areas due to expected rainfall on Saturday night or early Sunday. The storm has earlier left 25 dead in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras.
Evacuation activities had already begun at some offshore oil platforms in the Gulf and the Mississippi Government will provide buses for people.Around 11 evacuation shelters in areas away from the immediate coast will be opened.
Nate had already resulted in deadly flooding in parts of Central America. The US National Hurricane Center said that Nate could raise the sea levels by 1.2 to 2.1 metres from the Morgan City, Louisiana and the Alabama Florida border.
New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrian were under the latest hurricane warning.
Currently the storm was located 900 kilometres south-southeast from the mouth of Mississippi River and moved with the speed of 35 km/h.
Nicaragua was on complete alert and there were warning of flooding and landslides, there were constant rain following the Nate’s arrival leaving the ground saturated and rivers swollen.
