In the last few days, from the hill stations close to Delhi, several tourist vehicles have been turned away for not meeting the requirements related to travel document linked to Covid-19, with reported traffic snarls in all the popular destinations due to huge visitor rush in the middle of a heat wave in the northern plains and drop in infection rate, officials said on Sunday.

Last week, the Union health ministry, explained that a travel surge is being seen after lifting of the restrictions of Covid-19 — the government termed it “revenge travel” — led to “frightening” overcrowding in hill stations that could eventually cause a third outbreaks anytime soon. Images and videos from tourist destinations show violations of restrictions, with people without masks or not maintaining social distancing.

On highways in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, huge traffic jams have been reported in the last few days. The Uttarakhand Police record shows that around 4,000 vehicles were not allowed to enter the hill stations, an official said.

The official have also said that those who did not have negative Covid-19 test reports and advance booking confirmation for hotels were not allowed as per “well-publicized” protocol for visitors.

“We are stopping tourists who do not have a negative test report, online hotel booking confirmation and registration on smart city portal,” Mussoorie Police station incharge Rajeev Rauthan said.
