The aviation landscape of 2026 is witnessing a remarkable era of connectivity, and at the heart of this expansion is Africa’s leading carrier. In a move that solidifies its “Vision 2035” strategy, Ethiopian Airlines has officially announced the launch of a new thrice-weekly passenger service to Lyon, France, via Geneva, Switzerland.
Set to take flight on July 2, 2026, this new route marks a significant milestone for the Star Alliance member. Lyon becomes the airline’s third gateway in France, joining the established routes to Paris and Marseille. But this isn’t just another flight on a map; it is a calculated bridge between the economic heart of the Rhône-Alpes region and the vast, burgeoning markets of the African continent.

One of the most fascinating technical aspects of this new service is the “hop” between Geneva and Lyon. Covering a mere 53 nautical miles (98 km), the leg between the two European cities will officially become the shortest scheduled Airbus A350-900 operation in the world.
While the flight duration between Geneva and Lyon is estimated at just 45 minutes, the aircraft will serve as a high-capacity widebody “shuttle” for passengers moving between Switzerland and France, before continuing its long-haul journey back to the Ethiopian capital.

The service will operate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, utilizing the ultra-modern and fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900. The schedule has been meticulously timed to align with Ethiopian’s massive “hub-and-spoke” operation at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD).Flight No. From To Departure Arrival ET 738 Addis Ababa Geneva 00:10 06:30 ET 738 Geneva Lyon 07:30 08:15 ET 739 Lyon Geneva 19:20 20:05 ET 739 Geneva Addis Ababa 21:05 04:55 (+1)
The 11-hour “layover” in Lyon during the day is a strategic move. By arriving back in Addis Ababa in the early morning, passengers from Lyon can seamlessly connect to over 65 destinations across Africa, including popular hubs like Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos, and the tropical escapes of Zanzibar and the Seychelles.

Speaking on the announcement, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
“France has long been a key market for us,” Tasew stated. “With over five decades of connecting the country to Africa and beyond, we remain committed to facilitating trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties. This new route provides our passengers with seamless access to destinations across our worldwide network, reaffirming our commitment to offering reliable, convenient, and high-quality travel experiences.”
The choice of Lyon as the third French destination is no coincidence. Known as the Gastronomic Capital of the World, Lyon is a magnet for leisure travelers. However, it is also a vital industrial and business hub, home to major pharmaceutical, chemical, and tech sectors.
By linking Lyon with Geneva, Ethiopian Airlines is tapping into a wealthy, mobile population that frequently travels to Africa for both NGOs (given Geneva’s UN presence) and private enterprise.
Beyond the business suits and the tourist cameras, this route holds profound personal value. France is home to a significant African diaspora. For families in the Rhône-Alpes region, the new Lyon service removes the need for a long train ride to Paris or a multi-stop connection through other European hubs.
It is about reconnection. It’s the grandmother in Lyon who can now reach her family in Addis Ababa or Accra with more ease and dignity. It’s the student in Ethiopia who finds the path to a European university slightly shorter and more accessible.
A Vision of Sustainability and Growth
Ethiopian’s use of the A350-900 on this route is an example of their commitment to sustainability. With one of the youngest fleets in aviation, the airline can use the A350 to meet the lower carbon emission standards of European aviation. Therefore, they can use the A350 on this route to meet the high-density capacity and environmental demands of this essential corridor.
When the first ET 738 launches in July 2026, it will not only be transporting passengers but also propelling the momentum of a continent that is increasingly connected to the rest of the world.
