Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre

As the world has started to embrace the major COVID-19 vaccine rollout, several convention centres around the globe have been turned into vaccination sites. Convention centres can serve as ideal vaccination venues because of its usually large space and the ability to hold large crowds. Take a look at the some of the convention venues that has been serving as mega vaccination centres:

Calgary TELUS Convention Centre

The Calgary TELUS Convention Centre has been serving as a vaccination site since April 5, 2021. The centre has collaborated with the AHS in Calgary to offer immunization to people. Nearly 500 visited the centre to get their first vaccination shot within a week of its opening. People are required to present their Alberta Health Card with one Photo ID to avail the service. The City of Calgary is also providing 90 minutes free parking for people with vaccination appointments when they start a session via the pay machine or MyParking app. Calgarians who use transit to travel to the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre for vaccination will receive two Transit tickets as they exit the building. One ticket will cover the ticket purchased to travel to the vaccination centre, while the other can be used to return home. Meanwhile, the centre has also asked to visitors to observe social distancing and wear face masks upon entry.

Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre

One of the largest convention centres in Malaysia, the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) started operating as a major vaccination site in the country from May 31, 2021. The centre is rolling out vaccines from 8AM – 5PM and the vaccination is being conducted at two mega stations located at Hall 3 & Hall 4. People visiting MITEC for vaccination is allowed to use one entrance and exit at the South Entrance. The centre is providing a controlled capacity of 2,600 doses of vaccines for the initial phase. The vaccination programme at the centre is being managed by the Jabatan Kesihatan Titiwangsa and Jabatan Kesihatan Manjalara (District Health Offices) under Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). Only registered and confirmed citizens with MySejahtera appointment for MITEC is admitted into the Centre for the first phase.

Virginia Beach Convention Center

The coronavirus vaccination clinic at the Virginia Beach Convention Center has provided thousands of vaccines to several people over the past few months including several walk-ins, ultimately closing down last month. The vaccination site at the convention centre offered first and second doses of Pfizer and Moderna, as well as single doses of Johnson & Johnson, at the clinic from 8:30AM-5:30PM. The convention center on 19th Street was one of the first mass vaccination sites in the state during the pandemic, giving shots to community health care workers as early as January. Initially, it was managed by the local health department and the city, with Virginia Beach employees, such as EMTs and firefighters, staffing it. In late April, the state emergency management department and its contractor, Ashbritt, took over, expanding operations to six days a week but requiring appointments.

Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre started serving as a mega vaccination centre from June 7, 2021, in line with the government’s National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme and has the capacity of vaccinating a maximum of 8000 individuals daily. The centre is once again filled with thousands of daily visitors since it began its operation as a vaccination centre. The purpose-built venues are designed to seamlessly facilitate large crowd flow and to regulate movement from one point to another. Most of the senior and golden citizens scheduled for vaccination at the centre are experiencing the venue for the first time in their life, and are comforted by the ease of navigation and movement within the centre.

Cape Town International Convention Centre

The Cape Town International Convention Centre that was once home to thousands of COVID-19 patients is now set to be turned into a mass vaccination site. This follows an agreement between the provincial government and the City with formal contracts due to be signed imminently with the CTICC, paving the way for implementation within the next three to four weeks. It is envisaged that the site will be used for high volumes of vaccinations. The site, however, is expected to work at full capacity once vaccine supplies allow. It is intended that the CTICC will be the first of at least three major vaccination centres in Cape Town. Premier Alan Winde mentioned that the mass ‘vaccination centre of hope’ will be able to vaccinate over 4000 people a day at its peak. It will have up to 50 vaccination stations, with each station capable of administering 100 vaccinations per day.
