Highlighting the necessity to uphold heritage tourism in Goa, Carlos Alvares Ferreira, the MLA of Aldona said that the Corjuem Fort would be upheld and numerous events, comprising a yearly Corjuem fiesta, would be held at the fort.
Ferreira spoke during a review of the fort along with Subhash Phal Dessai, the minister of archives and
archaeology along with department representatives.
Ferreira said that Goa mot only highlights sand and sea, it has other important things to show off as well.
Heritage tourism in the state comprises forts and ancient houses along with Goa’s early history. This is
the part of Goa which needs to be highlighted which till now remained in the background. An annual Corjuem festival would be held at the fort. It would let all locals to visit the state and provide a possibility for stage performers to present their craft. The state’s rural areas need to be emphasized along with boosting the local economy so that revenue is generated.
The Corjuem fort was constructed in 1550 and was initially the possession of the Bhonsle sovereigns of
Sawantwadi. Nevertheless, during the period of Viceroy Caetano de Mello e Castro, the fort was seized as part of the Portuguese rule of Goa.
