India: Atleast 288 dead and over 1000 injured in a tragic triple train crash in Odisha

Nearly 288 people are killed with more than 1000 injured as many bogies of the Coromandel Express getting overturned in Odisha, Balasore district, India, today evening. Over 3,400 passengers were travelling in two trains.

This tragic triple train crash happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday, prompting the Indian Railway Ministry to order a probe. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has mobilised all the aid for the search and rescue operations in the aftermath of Coromandel Express accident.


At around 7.20 p.m., the mishap occurred close to the Bahanaga Bazar station when the train was going to Chennai Central station departing from Shalimar station near Kolkata, said the representatives.


The CPRO Southern Railway stated that several bogies have been derailed in this incident. It is not known surely as to how many people are hurt in this disaster. Accident assistance trains have been sent to the spot.


The Special Relief Commissioner Office stated that rescue teams have reached the accident spot for searching and saving the survivors.


The Collector of Balasore has also requested to make all essential preparations and get in touch with the SRC in case they require any assistance from the state level.


Two fire teams have been sent from Bhadrak to the accident spot. Four components of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), three divisions of NDRF along with 60 ambulances are functioning to rescue the wounded and survivors.


Doctors are visiting from Balasore Medical College. All medical colleges and hospitals in Balasore have been informed of the accident. SCB Medical College in Cuttack is also prepared for assistance.

Indian Army has been deployed to assist in the evacuation and treatment of injured citizens. Army medical and engineering teams with ambulances & support services have been deployed from the Eastern Command. The teams have been routed from multiple bases so as to reach the place of the incident as early as possible.

Officials in Bhubaneswar said that more than 200 ambulances, 50 buses and 45 mobile health units were working at the accident site, besides 1,200 personnel. The bodies were being taken to the hospitals in all kinds of vehicles, including tractors.

Italian embassy in India extend their condolences to the people of India and the families of the victims of the train accident in Odisha.
