Across Europe, normally busy tourist sites are witnessing visitor numbers go down amid fears over the corona virus epidemic. On Monday, the EU’s industry chief said that the tourism sector is seeing a loss of around €1 billion a month due to the virus.
The figure was announced by the EU’s Internal Market Commissioner, Thierry Breton, who had previously cautioned that tourism is one of the sectors expected to be affected badly financially as the virus continues to spread.
In Paris, the Louvre Museum was closed for a second day on Monday with its employees refusing to work over fears of contracting the disease.
In Italy, where tourism makes up 13 percent of the economy, almost 1,700 cases of the virus have been reported so far. Hotel cancellations rates in Italy have soared up to 90 percent in some areas, according to the government.
