Corsica is set to revolutionize its tourism industry with a bold new strategy aimed at boosting winter travel and attracting year-round visitors. By investing €2.5 million in expanding off-season flight routes, the island is enhancing connectivity and providing more opportunities for both leisure and luxury travelers. This move, which includes partnerships with Air Corsica and Volotea, aims to reduce the heavy reliance on summer tourism and promote sustainable, balanced travel throughout the year. With direct flights to key European destinations, Corsica is poised to offer its unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and exclusive experiences even during the quieter winter months.

Corsica, a captivating French island with a rich Italian influence, has long been a beloved destination for British tourists, dating back to the 1950s. In fact, Corsica holds the distinction of being the first place to offer all-inclusive package holidays. Over the years, its allure has only grown, with approximately three million visitors flocking to the island annually. Most of these visitors tend to arrive between May and September, when the weather is at its warmest, and the island is bustling with life.

In an effort to expand tourism beyond the summer months and to foster year-round visits, Corsica is making a strategic move by investing €2.5 million (£2.1 million) over the next four years. The aim is to encourage more winter tourism by increasing the availability of off-season flights. Through this initiative, the Corsican Assembly (CDC) has partnered with Air Corsica and Volotea to launch more winter routes. These new services will primarily connect mainland Europe to Corsica’s two main cities, Ajaccio and Bastia. This expansion will help to alleviate the island’s heavy reliance on peak-season tourism, promote sustainable travel, and diversify the tourism economy by attracting visitors during the quieter months.

At present, direct flights from the UK to Corsica are limited to the summer season. Notably, easyJet will begin flying to Bastia in May 2026, while British Airways and easyJet will operate flights to Figari in June. Despite these seasonal limitations, Corsica remains a highly attractive destination, boasting a mild Mediterranean climate that appeals even beyond the summer months. During peak summer, temperatures can soar up to 30°C, but the island offers much more than just sunny beaches. Corsica’s landscape is a blend of rugged mountains, charming coastal towns, and lush vegetation, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Corsica is home to approximately 200 beaches, many of which are renowned for their crystal-clear waters and stunning natural beauty. Palombaggia Beach, located on the island’s southeastern coast, consistently ranks among the world’s best beaches. Its fine white sand, turquoise waters, and surrounding hills make it an idyllic setting for both relaxation and water sports.

The island’s two major cities, Bastia and Ajaccio, each offer unique cultural and historical experiences. Bastia, which was once the capital of Corsica, is known for its Old Harbour, charming old town, and vibrant market scenes. As France’s second-busiest passenger port after Calais, it serves as a key entry point for visitors. Ajaccio, the current capital of Corsica, holds significant historical importance as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. The city is home to several museums dedicated to the famous emperor, including Maison Bonaparte, the house where Napoleon was born, and the Fesch Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Italian Renaissance art.

Beyond its rich history and natural beauty, Corsica also offers a taste of luxury for those seeking an exclusive getaway. Located on the southern coast of the island, Cala Rossa is a particularly upscale destination, known for its luxurious accommodations and serene atmosphere. It has become a favorite among celebrities and high-profile figures, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Beyoncé. The area’s stunning beaches, private villas, and chic resorts have also made it a regular feature in media, including appearances in the popular British reality TV show Made in Chelsea.

Despite its appeal as a summer hotspot, Corsica is now focusing on a more balanced tourism strategy. The new investment in winter flights aims to spread out the flow of visitors and promote Corsica as a year-round destination. With winter temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C, the island is perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape from the bustle of the holiday season or winter’s chill in other parts of Europe. Visitors can enjoy the island’s charming villages, scenic hiking trails, and quiet beaches without the usual summer crowds.

In conclusion, Corsica’s investment in winter tourism and the expansion of off-season flights reflect a forward-thinking approach to balancing its tourism industry. By attracting more visitors during the winter months, the island aims to support sustainable travel and ensure that its unique charm is experienced year-round. Whether it’s the allure of its beautiful beaches, rich history, or exclusive luxury resorts, Corsica continues to be an unmissable destination for British tourists and travelers from around the world.
