Costa Maya has recently begun one more facet of Lahun Tiku, an integration of Culture-based Tourism complemented with sustainable development which promotes the values of the Mayan community. The project is located outside the town of Mahahual and being developed through a partnership with Playa Tiku Investment Group with the plans of developing a boutique hotel destination. The project is expected to be a one of a kind offering a unique experience to visitors.
The first completed phase of the Lahun Tiku development was unveiled with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Governor Mara Lezama. This moment marked a significant step in the region’s tourism transformation, as Costa Maya continues to attract both local and international visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences.

Governor Lezama, accompanied by members of the Playa Tiku Investment Group, toured the site, which includes several key components aimed at showcasing the rich traditions and crafts of the region. The ceremony also included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion. In addition, the Governor visited the Cristo de Mar Chapel, a central feature of the development, and met with local artisans from the nearby town of Xpichil.
One of the focal points of the Lahun Tiku development is the sculpture “Sacred Hands (Union of Two Worlds).” This striking piece of art symbolizes the connection between the Mayan cultural legacy and the region’s modern, sustainable growth. The sculpture serves as a visual representation of Costa Maya’s efforts to preserve its cultural identity while promoting responsible tourism and development.
Governor Lezama explained that the tourism project not only prioritizes the preservation of local culture but also aims to foster pride in the region’s indigenous traditions. “Tourists, including cruise passengers, will be able to experience the essence of our culture and take home a piece of who we are,” she said. She emphasized that visitors to the site will have the opportunity to purchase handcrafted goods, such as traditional wood carvings, hammocks, and embroidery, which are now recognized as part of Mexico’s cultural heritage.
The first phase of Lahun Tiku, completed between August 2024 and November 2025, has already made significant strides in offering a unique cultural experience. It includes several key facilities, such as the Club de Playa Penélope, a beach club designed to give visitors a relaxing seaside experience, and the central town area, which features the Cristo de Mar Chapel and the Sacred Hands sculpture.

The development also includes a cultural area complete with an amphitheater and reception building, providing space for local performances, cultural events, and educational programs. This area is designed to be an interactive space where tourists can learn about the region’s history, art, and traditions while also enjoying recreational amenities. As the first phase of the project continues to attract visitors, the cultural area is becoming an important destination for travelers seeking more than just typical beach experiences.
Looking ahead, the second phase of the Lahun Tiku development is slated to begin in 2026 and run through 2027. This next phase will introduce 24 boutique hotels to the area, expanding the hospitality options available to tourists and creating a comprehensive tourism offering that combines cultural experiences with modern lodging facilities.
These new hotels will be strategically located to complement the existing infrastructure while preserving the natural beauty of the region. According to Miguel Ángel Lemus, President of the Quintana Roo Real Estate Developers Association, the influx of new investments in the area signals a bright future for Mahahual. The development of Lahun Tiku and its associated hotels will contribute to the growth of the local economy, offering new job opportunities and promoting sustainable tourism in the region.
The Lahun Tiku project is not only a cultural and tourism initiative but also a model for sustainable development. The Playa Tiku Investment Group is working closely with local and national government bodies to ensure that the development respects both the environment and the region’s heritage. The project is designed to minimize its environmental footprint, with efforts to conserve natural resources, reduce waste, and integrate green technologies wherever possible.
This approach is in line with broader tourism trends in Mexico, where there is increasing focus on sustainable practices, community involvement, and cultural preservation. Costa Maya is positioning itself as a destination that offers authentic experiences without compromising its commitment to protecting the environment and supporting local communities.
Lahun Tiku is providing an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the one of a kind fusion of ancient Mayan customs with present-day industry that makes Costa Maya so remarkable. With a focus on local mitigation, conservation of history, and sustainable forms of tourism, Lahun Tiku is not just an entertainment venue, it is also a reflection of the Costa Maya region’s commitment to the preservation of its culture and its history while moving forward.
