In 2022, Costa Rica saw a surge of over 74% in international tourists, welcoming nearly 2.5 million visitors. The Costa Rica tourism market is currently valued at approximately USD 300.2 million and is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 5% from 2024 to 2029. Costa Rica anticipates a return to pre-pandemic levels of international visitors by 2024.
During the first half of 2023, Costa Rica’s tourism industry attracted 1,338,303 visitors, marking a 19.4% increase compared to the same period in 2022 and surpassing the 2019 numbers.

By 2024, Costa Rica’s travel and tourism market is projected to generate revenue of USD 315.90 million, with an annual growth rate of 6.40% from 2024 to 2029.
The United States remains the top source of international visitors to Costa Rica, contributing 39.3% of all tourists in 2012. Other notable sources of visitors include Nicaragua (20.2%), Canada (6.5%), Panama (3.9%), and Mexico (2.9%).

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) – Juan Santamaría International Airport serves as the main gateway to Costa Rica’s capital, San José. Situated in Alajuela Province, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of downtown San José, this airport is named after national hero Juan Santamaría, who bravely defended the country in 1856. As the busiest airport in Costa Rica and the second busiest in Central America, it handled over 5.6 million passengers in 2023, marking the highest traffic in its history.
Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) – Also known as Liberia International Airport, Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is a key entry point for tourists visiting Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and western regions. Located 11 kilometers (7 miles) west-southwest of Liberia in Guanacaste Province, this airport ranks as the second busiest in the country. In 2022, it accommodated 1,392,698 passengers and saw 21,405 flight movements, highlighting its growing popularity and importance as a tourism hub.
Sansa Airlines – Sansa Airlines stands as a leading domestic carrier in Costa Rica, providing flights to numerous destinations across the country, including well-known tourist spots like Quepos, Tamarindo, and Nosara.
Nature Air – Before ceasing operations in 2018, Nature Air played a significant role as a domestic airline in Costa Rica, specializing in flights to remote locations throughout the country.
Green Airways – Green Airways, a family-operated airline, offers domestic flights on key routes, particularly between San José and popular locations such as Tambor and Puerto Jiménez.
Costa Rica leverages its prime coastal location to enhance its cruise tourism industry. Ports along the Pacific coast, including Puntarenas, and those on the Caribbean coast like Limón, are being upgraded to accommodate larger cruise ships. Leading cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line now feature Costa Rica in their itineraries, drawing thousands of cruise passengers annually. These visitors significantly boost the local economy through spending on shore excursions, dining, and shopping. As cruise infrastructure continues to develop, Costa Rica is set to strengthen its position as a top cruise destination in Central America.
