It’s the 4th day of resurgence of the Covid-19 in China and more than 1000 new cases are being reported daily. 13 cities across the country were under full lockdown as of Tuesday, with partial lockdowns imposed in dozens of other cities.

On Tuesday, 3000 new cases were reported in Jilin on Tuesday. This made the Chinese government to put the entire population of 24 million in the province under quarantine. After Wuhan and Hubei, this was the first province that was put under lockdown since the start of the pandemic in 2020. Jilin’s provincial capital, Changchun are under stay at home orders. Also in the province of Shenzen, a 5 day lockdown has been imposed. All public services like buses and subway services have been suspended in the technological hub of 12.5 million.

Lanzhou University is running a Covid forecasting system. They have predicted that the ongoing wave could be brought under control by early April after around 35,000 cases. They also stated that the new wave in China can be brought under control if there are stringent quarantine rules in place. They also believe that the Wuhan outbreak could have been controlled if the strict curbs were maintained.

Zhang Wenhong, the China’s top infectious disease expert has said that this was the most difficult time during their battle against COVID-19. The strict lockdowns and rising cases have raised the risk of trade disruption after some auto and electronics factories suspended their operations. Companies like Toyota, Volkswagen and Apple supplier Foxconn have suspended their working in these areas.
