Since long, Dharamsala was planned to be developed into a sports tourism destination. The idea was considered after the building of the international cricket stadium in Dharamsala.

The BJP government had declared building a shooting academy and the Saina Nehwal badminton academy in this place. However, both these proposals are yet to see the light of the day.

Since 2013, this cricket stadium has not witnessed any IPL match. Only two matches between India and Sri Lanka took place in the stadium last year.

Rakesh Pathania, the Minister for Forest, Youth Affairs and Sports said that the Himachal government had received Rs. 5 crore from the Union Ministry for Sports for building a shooting academy.

Roughly, Rs. 7 crore was required for creating the academy. Rs. 5 crore has been obtained from the Union government while the remaining Rs. 2 crore would be given by the state government, said the minister.

Ashwani Bamba, the president of the Dharamsala Hotel and Restaurant Association said that tourism is witnessing a drop since the beginning of the pandemic.

Dharamsala tourism is largely reliant on international tourists.

Nevertheless, even though the pandemic is over, the arrival of international tourists is yet to gain momentum.

The Himachal government needs to provide a stimulus to sports tourism for luring domestic and international tourists. In spite of the investment of crores in the cricket stadium, no IPL matches have been held here for many years now.
