A direct flight between Indore and Sharjah was inaugurated today (on March 31) by Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia along with MoS Ministry of Civil Aviation, Gen. Dr Vijay Kumar Singh (Rtd.). This new route aims to enhance connectivity with the Middle East and promote trade, commerce and tourism in Madhya Pradesh.
It will operate three days a week. In his inaugural address, Scindia said that after Indore to Dubai, Indore to Sharjah will be Indore’s second air connectivity with UAE. This will not only boost trade and commerce but also connect families living in two different countries.
In terms of connectivity and infrastructural development, Scindia stated that Indore was only connected to six locations in 2013-14. It has expanded 400% in the last nine years to 24 locations, including two overseas destinations. Formerly, weekly air traffic flow from Indore was 320, but it has now grown to 500, representing a 52% increase.
The Minister went on to say that in 2014, Madhya Pradesh had air connection with only eight cities in the country, but currently it has air connectivity with 26 cities, representing a 300% increase. The state’s weekly air traffic flow was 500 aircraft; in 9 years, it has climbed to 840.
Under the RCS UDAN project, Madhya Pradesh was assigned 60 routes, 33 of which are presently active and the remaining 12 would be operational shortly.
Reva airport’s foundation was just established; Rs. 50 crores is to be invested in its construction. A new integrated terminal facility is being built in Gwalior at a cost of Rs 500 crore. Jabalpur is also getting a new integrated terminal building for roughly Rs 475 crore.
Aloke Singh, Managing Director of Air India Express, AirAsia India and Captain Manish Uppal, Head of Operations AirAsia India were also present during the event.
