Domestic tourism in Cambodia sees a high tide in spite of COVID scare

The provincial tourism departments all over Cambodia have explained that more than 1.1 million domestic tourists visited different resorts all through the New Year holiday.


Recently, the departments issued a declaration that said that for 2021-2022 New Year holiday, a total of 1,145,141 tourists visited Cambodian destinations like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with 1,139,387 domestic tourists and 5,754 international foreign visitors. Almost 190,000 domestic tourists also visited resort areas and celebrated New Year’s Eve 2022 in Siem Reap, said the information department of the province.


On January 1st, a report by the Siem Reap provincial department of tourism explained that it estimated almost 76 per cent of the celebrants were local tourists with 140,000 to 150,000 in attendance along with another 40,000 to 50,000 tourists visiting the province.


“As noted, the family-friendly travel options reflect the Cambodian people’s willingness to live within the new normal where caution is the key to prosperity,” the report said.


The report also mentioned that over the holiday, around 170,000 tourists visited the Angkor resort and about 5,000 tourists visited the Phnom Kulen National Park while 14,000 tourists visited community-based tourism and ecotourism areas and other areas.


On Pub Street, people of Siem Reap have assembled to greet the New Year and in Preah Domnak Park in downtown Siem Reap.


In the meantime, the Ministry of Health on Sunday reported three new Covid-19 cases, all of which were imported and confirmed to be the Omicron variant.
