Several countries are slowly reopening their borders to the tourists, however, travelers from Madurai appear so that they are keen to explore domestic tourism, travel and tour agents claim.

President of Travel Club, Madurai, G. Ravindran explains that they are hopeful that the demand for global tourism will increase in the coming six months.

To quote Ravindran, “People in Madurai and southern districts who go on annual vacations take time to decide on travel unlike those in bigger cities who are more frequent travelers.” However, while travelling on tour packages to north Indian destinations, many are facing accommodation related problem as during the lockdown, many hotels were not maintained, he said. Now, in advance, the tour operators are sending some of their workers to check lodging facilities for tourists on package tours to save from embarrassment.

For local tourism, tour agents claim that during the pilgrimage season, they normally get good bookings, but that too is yet to reach its normal rate.

“In pre-covid times, we would have our vehicles booked in advance for over a month during the Sabarimala season, but this year, there has not been bulk bookings yet,” said K Kannan, a tour operator.
