As the world celebrated globe Environment Day on June 5th, Dubai has reaffirmed its commitment to improving efforts to promote sustainability and responsible tourism. Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has established itself as a significant body leading the charge in environmental protection in the city of Dubai, which is home to a robust and active tourism sector.

With a firm commitment to sustainability, the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has championed a slew of ground-breaking strategic initiatives aimed at conserving the environment and crafting a greener, more sustainable future for the city’s tourist industry.

The Dubai Can is one of the innovative efforts Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has developed to minimise single-use plastic use. The citywide sustainability movement has gained amazing success since its inception in February 2022 by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.

The revolutionary campaign encourages communities to abandon single-use plastic bottles in favour of more sustainable alternatives. To date, Dubai Can’s combined efforts and relationship with Talabat have delivered exceptional results, resulting in a decrease of almost 10 million 500ml single-use plastic water bottles.

This incredible accomplishment attests to the initiative’s overwhelming success and the steadfast passion of the local community, stakeholders, and partners engaged.

Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to develop a ‘refill for life’ mentality, as well as execute this practise in their families and businesses, by promoting small adjustments such as embracing the habit of utilising refillable water bottles and accessing public water stations.

Dubai is leading the fight in advocating a refill culture, with 50 strategically positioned public water fountains across the city, resulting in a significant decrease of millions of single-use plastic water bottles.
Motivated by His Highness’ vision Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) is another DET effort that is at the vanguard of promoting Dubai as a leading sustainable destination, according to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.

DST is leading a transformative path towards a more environmentally conscious and socially responsible tourism sector by aligning the tourism sector with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 vision.

Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance sector, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, told to ANI, “World Environment Day serves as a powerful catalyst for global action, and Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism is proud to lead the charge in promoting sustainability and responsible tourism.

The remarkable achievements of the Dubai Can initiative are a testament to our unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and shaping a greener future for Dubai’s tourism industry. The initiative’s recent figures display the transformative power of Dubai Can and the collective efforts of our community in embracing sustainable alternatives.

Beyond Dubai Can, we are actively driving change through innovative strategies and partnerships. The Dubai Sustainable Tourism initiative serves as another shining example of our unwavering dedication to fostering sustainability within the tourism sector.”
