On Friday, April 30, 2021 the temporary shelter at Edmonton Convention Centre closed its doors after six months of use. The Tipinawaw shelter opened October 30, 2020 as a place for hundreds of the city’s homeless to safely shelter during the winter months of the pandemic. The shelter was to have closed at the end of March, but city councillors voted to fund the facility for another 30 days, until April 30.

Starting Saturday, Boyle Street Community Service and the Bissell Centre have started offering additional daytime services at their downtown locations. Hope Mission will move its temporary shelter from Commonwealth Stadium to the Spectrum Building at Northlands next week. Once ready, it will offer 150 overnight spaces for those in need.  Federal funding will also make available a further 200 transitional housing units.

Christel Kjenner, Director, Affordable Housing & Homelessness, City of Edmonton said in a statement that it was important to find a large space that could accommodate as many people as possible. She shared that having a very large facility is good from the perspective of social distancing, though it might not be the best from the perspective of meaningful connections with people receiving services.
