Edmund Bartlett, the Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, has welcomed the kick-start of construction work on the RIU Aquarelle. Rui Resorts, the Spanish hotel chain, is the first foreign investor in Jamaica to break ground for a hotel construction as the country reopened it’s the tourism sector, post COVID.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the hotel was done by the Prime Minister, Andrew Holness.
“It makes you the first foreign investor to break ground in this wave of recovery. And that makes us very special,” Bartlett informed Jamaica Observer at the time of the ground-breaking ceremony.
Also, he observed that since the beginning of the tourism bounce back time, RIU Hotels has become the second to break ground for hotel construction next to Sandals Resorts International in Jamaica.
“And you are the second to break ground in this wave. The first, of course, was our local star themselves, the Sandals group, that had the ground breaking for the 1,000 rooms, eventually,” Bartlett stated.
Also, the tourism minister has applauded RIU as the largest foreign investor in tourism in the country.
“And, with the groundbreaking today of this 700 room, it makes you definitely the largest foreign investor in tourism with 3,000 rooms and employing in excess of 2,000,” Bartlett said.
Also, Bartlett welcomed the launch of a new strategic plan from Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts-owners, Grupo Piñero, in the Caribbean earlier 2022.
