It is hoped by Ahmed Issa, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, that the encouraging growth in tourists this year will convert into a 30 percent gain by the end of the year, bringing the total to 15 million.

According to him, the number of tourists has increased by 34% in the last two months compared to the same period last year.

He made the remarks during a symposium organized by the Egyptian-Lebanese Businessmen Association titled “Tourism and Industry: Promising Opportunities for Economic Development.”

According to Issa, the Egyptian government has devised a new national tourism plan and intends to double the number of visitors to 30 million by 2028. More effective coordination is needed with the private sector and the industry’s 3,000 operators, who are affiliated with five tourism chambers and the Egyptian Tourism Federation. Growth rates are expected to range between 25 and 30 percent.

The Tourism Minister notes that there are three components for success by 2028: doubling Egyptian Airlines’ capacity; enhancing services, particularly safeguarding tourists from harassment and fraud; and strengthening the investment climate to triple the capacity of hotels and recreational activities.

He said that Egypt has not capitalised on a massive market of 272 million tourists worldwide who wish to appreciate the country’s products. Issa said there were encouraging signals that the country was making progress towards capturing a larger share of the market, noting an increase in December data.

He stated that the government was concentrating its efforts on 12 key market segments, including the Pyramids Area Development Plan.

Last week, Issa stated that 11.7 million tourists arrived in Egypt in 2022. The number of tourists visiting Egypt climbed by 85.4 percent to 4.9 million in the first half of 2022, compared to 2.6 million in the same time in 2021, according to statistics from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

In 2021, there were 8 million tourists from all countries, up from 3.7 million in 2020, representing a whopping 117.5 percent rise.
