Ahead of the UN Conference on Climate Change 2022 (COP27), Egypt’s environment and tourism ministries announced Thursday the launch several environmental initiatives between them to promote eco-tourism, including the Eco-Egypt campaign to connect travellers with Egypt’s ecological sites and protected areas.

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, and the newly appointed Minister of Tourism Ahmed Issa tackled in a meeting on Thursday the latest preparations of hotel and tourist facilities in Sharm El-Sheikh to receive COP27 guests this November as well as the launch of several initiatives to promote eco-tourism including the Eco-Egypt initiative.

A new website portal, Eco-Egypt includes a green List of eco-labeled hotels, ecolodges, Green Fins-certified diving centres, and eco-friendly products.

Green Fins – a proven conservation management approach – is implemented internationally by The Reef-World Foundation and the UN Environment Programme – which reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with marine tourism.

It aims to protect coral reefs through environmentally friendly guidelines, according to a website.

They noted that 40 diving centres in Sharm El-Sheikh have already obtained the Green Fins certificate, and 132 hotel facilities have obtained certificates stating the application of green practices.

All diving centres and hotels in Sharm El-Sheikh are scheduled to obtain these certificates by the end of September.

Egypt is ranked ninth in the world in number of diving centres with Green Fins accreditation, having reached this position in just two years, the ministerial statement said.

The two ministers also reviewed a project to integrate biodiversity with tourism in Egypt in order to support eco-tourism in the Red Sea, which is the destination for 80 percent of tourism in Egypt due to the region’s unique biological diversity of plants, birds, animals and ecosystems.

Furthermore, the meeting reviewed the latest developments in the work carried out by the Permanent Committee in Sharm El-Sheikh, which is responsible for following up on the preparations of hotel and tourist establishments in the city for COP 27.

COP27 is set to take place from 7-17 November.

The event will be held at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Centre (SHICC), one of the largest and most innovative conference centres in the Middle East and Africa.

The complex has a variety of flexible conference and exhibition halls that will form the Blue Zone for COP27.

The incoming Egyptian COP27 presidency has identified a range of topics focused on enhancing implementation and raising ambitions on a broad range of issues related to climate change, according to the official website.

Egypt has further designated several thematic days for focused discussions, including side events, panel discussions, round tables, and other interactive formats to deliberate on and share with the wider audience, the website noted.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced last week the launch of the official COP27 Facebook page. The official Twitter account of COP27 was created in March.
