Emirates has joined the pioneering UAE research group, Air-CRAFT, dedicated to advancing renewable and advanced aviation fuels. The consortium was launched at the 3rd ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels and is supported by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority. Its founding members include ADNOC, Boeing, ENOC Group, Etihad, Honeywell, Khalifa University, and Masdar.
Air-CRAFT, the UAE Centre for Renewable and Advanced Fuel Technologies for Aviation, is pioneering collaboration across the aviation value chain, bringing together industrial policymakers, aviation regulators, fuel producers, academia, researchers, aircraft and powerplant manufacturers, and airline operators. This is a ground-breaking project that is in line with the UAE’s commitment to sustainability.
The consortium’s goal is to develop, manufacture, and scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technologies, including environmental impact studies, feedstock and process optimization, and techno-economic analyses. Air-CRAFT supports the principles of the UAE’s National SAF Roadmap as well as the commercial aviation industry’s aim of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
Senior representatives from the eight entities signed a strategic collaboration agreement at CAAF/3, highlighting their commitment to accelerating SAF production. The consortium invites local and international organizations to join this transformative project. Air-CRAFT is already in advanced talks with key worldwide players.
Emirates, an Air-CRAFT launch entity, is proud to have contributed to the achievement of the National SAF Roadmap. ADNOC, Boeing, ENOC, Etihad, Honeywell, Khalifa University, and Masdar are among the consortium’s important partners, emphasizing the consortium’s importance in encouraging innovation and collaboration for a greener aviation future.
Air-CRAFT complements the UAE’s ambitious environmental aims and its hosting of COP28 in 2023. As the globe seeks decarbonization solutions, the consortium plays an important role in developing sustainable aviation practices and moving the UAE towards a cleaner, more resilient aviation sector.
