Through the Air Carrier Access Act the body will be covering the travel of animals on commercial flights. However, the officials hope to restrict the right of free travel to dogs which are trained to help people with disabilities.
There are concerns raised by the airlines which the proposal will address that the system is being misused.
The department mentioned that the individuals with disabilities will be protected.
A statement mentioned that the department recognized the integral role that the service animals play in the lives of many individuals with disabilities and wants to ensure that individuals with disabilities can continue using their service animals along with reducing the likelihood that passengers wishing to travel with their pets will be able to falsely claim their pets are service animals.
Emotional support animals will no-longer be classified as service animals and the airlines for America which represents the United States-based carriers had applauded the move.
Nicholas Calio, Airlines for America chief executive said that airlines want all passengers and crew to have a safe and comfortable flying experience, and they were confident the proposed rule will go a long way in ensuring a safer and healthier experience for everyone.
