The European Union and Japan have inked an agreement that would increase their collaboration in the sphere of aviation. The deal reached by the Swedish President of the Council would provide EU carriers non-discriminatory access to routes between the bloc and Japan, thereby boosting “open and fair competition”, SchengenVisaInfo.com says.

“Today we have set another milestone in the EU’s external aviation policy. This agreement will allow all EU air carriers to benefit from the right of the establishment when providing air services to Japan, thus bringing existing bilateral agreements of our member states in line with Union law. This will further develop the EU’s cooperation with one of our key partners in the region,” Swedish Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Andreas Carlson, said.

After the Court of Justice’s decisions in the Open Skies cases, the European Council authorised the Commission to begin discussions with authorities from third countries on the replacement of certain sections in bilateral air services agreements.

Restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus resulted in a significant fall in the number of flights, resulting in a disastrous scenario, particularly for the travel and tourism industry. According to the Simple Flying report, the number of flights expected for the first quarter of this year is still 50% of pre-pandemic levels.

In the first quarter of 2023, 1,620 flights are scheduled between January and March, representing just 54% of those registered in the first quarter of 2020.

At the same time, Japan will have scheduled passenger flights to 14 European nations, including Italy and Finland, in the first quarter.

Spain signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan in September of last year to promote bilateral cooperation and aid in the growth of the tourism sector.

The Tourism Ministry claimed that the agreement will allow the governments of both nations to share experiences and devise initiatives of mutual interest.

Last year, the European Commission released an analysis of Japan’s measures that resulted in visa implications, as well as an outline of the steps made to restore visa-waiver reciprocity.

The Commission emphasised that one of the key foundations of EU visa policy is ensuring that all countries on the European Union visa-free list eliminate their visa requirements for EU nationals.
