Europe is bracing for a significant worsening of weather conditions as a cold snap brings even more heavy snowfall, further disrupting travel across the continent. Over the coming days, authorities have warned of flight cancellations, delays on the rail network, and blocked roads due to continued snowstorms and freezing temperatures. As the adverse weather conditions intensify, many travelers are already facing significant disruptions, and the situation is expected to worsen in the coming days.
In the Netherlands, authorities have urged residents to stay at home if possible, as a fresh blizzard is expected to arrive overnight. The country has been grappling with severe weather for several days, and the situation looks set to continue. Dutch airline KLM took preventive measures by cancelling 600 flights on Wednesday to avoid the chaos of last-minute cancellations. This decision comes after the airline had already been forced to cancel 400 flights the previous day. KLM explained that the cancellations were a proactive measure to avoid overcrowding at Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs.
Despite these efforts, travelers at Schiphol have been left stranded, including Simiao Sun, who feared spending her 40th birthday in transit after being told she would need to wait three days for a rescheduled flight to the UK. She expressed concern about her child missing school and herself missing work while waiting in long queues at the airport. Although KLM offered alternative flights where possible, the airline admitted to being overwhelmed by inquiries from affected passengers.
In France, the situation was no less dire. Philippe Tabarot, the French Minister for Transportation, announced that at least 40% of flights would be cancelled at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, with a quarter of flights also cancelled at the smaller Orly Airport. This decision was made ahead of expected snowfall the following morning, which was anticipated to cause significant disruptions to both flights and public transportation in the Paris region. The snowstorms had already caused widespread delays, with Eurostar high-speed trains from Amsterdam to Paris either cancelled or running late.
In addition to the disruptions at airports, all domestic rail services in the Netherlands were suspended early on Tuesday due to an IT outage that impacted the national rail network. While some train services resumed later in the day, delays continued, particularly around Amsterdam, where snow caused additional delays to services. The continuing weather issues in the country have added to the already challenging travel conditions.
The severe weather in France has resulted in a number of fatal accidents, with at least five people reported dead as a result of snow-induced accidents. BFMTV, a French news station, confirmed these fatalities, which occurred as snowstorms continued to wreak havoc on roads and highways across the country. On Monday evening, traffic congestion in the Paris area reached an all-time high, with 1,000 kilometers of traffic jams reported. Authorities are working to clear the roads, but the danger from hazardous conditions persists.

In Germany, temperatures plunged to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southern and eastern parts of the country. A blanket of snow covered much of the region, further complicating transportation. The severe cold conditions have also caused disruptions, with trains, buses, and flights facing delays and cancellations.
Meanwhile, in the UK, the Meteorological Office warned that winter weather hazards could continue across most of the country throughout the week. On Tuesday, temperatures in Marham, Norfolk, in eastern England, dropped as low as minus 12.5 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest night of the winter so far. These freezing conditions have made travel treacherous, with roads and rail services severely impacted.
The Western Balkans region has also been severely affected by the heavy snowfall, with several countries experiencing blocked roads, power outages, and flooding. In Bosnia, the weather has caused widespread damage, including the tragic death of a woman in the capital Sarajevo. She was killed when a tree, burdened with wet snow, fell on her. The region continues to battle the effects of the snowstorm, with road closures and disruptions to daily life.
Travelers across Europe continue to face an increasingly difficult situation as the heavy snow and freezing temperatures persist. KLM, Air France, and other airlines are working tirelessly to accommodate affected passengers, but the sheer volume of cancellations and delays has left many stranded in airports or facing long waits for rescheduled flights. The railway networks in both France and the Netherlands are still struggling to return to full capacity, and public transportation in major cities like Paris has been sporadically disrupted.
With snowstorms expected to worsen in the coming days, the outlook for travelers remains uncertain. Authorities in many countries are advising people to stay home or postpone travel plans if possible. Meanwhile, those already on the move are urged to prepare for further delays, cancellations, and potential disruptions to both domestic and international travel.
As the severe cold snap continues to grip Europe, travelers across the continent are facing ongoing disruptions to their journeys. With flights cancelled, trains delayed, and roads blocked by snow, the situation looks set to worsen before it improves. Those traveling through major hubs like Schiphol, Charles de Gaulle, and Orly should anticipate further disruptions and follow official guidance to ensure their safety. The continuing winter weather is having a major impact on transportation across Europe, and authorities are working to manage the crisis as best as they can.
