Many in the tourism industry were expecting a possible summer recovery in Japanese visitors in Hawaii, but as per new projections, it could still be months away.
Andy Trade, running a photography business for Japanese weddings, said that he used to get around 4 calls every day before COVID, but now he’s getting zero.
According to Hawaii Tourism Japan, in 2019, the state witnessed around 5,000 travelers visiting from Japan each day during the month of May. Now that number has been reduced to 50 to 75. Restrictions on travel by the Japanese Government are considered the biggest reason behind this.
Hawaii Tourism Japan said that Japanese visitor spending accounts for 12 percent of Hawaii’s entire tourism industry.
