Fiji plans to attract more international sporting activities to generate more tourism revenue for the island nation.

Fiji’s Tourism Minister Premila Kumar said here on Thursday that sports tourism is very important for Fiji as it contributes significantly to the country’s economic growth.

She said that such events benefited the country as they promoted Fiji as a tourist destination.

By holding the games for the past three years, Fiji has seen the tourism numbers going up particularly from New Zealand, she said, adding it is a clear indication that through such events, Fiji has been promoted as a good tourism destination.

Kumar said Fiji was also eyeing the possibility to host World Rugby tournaments in the near future to boost her popularity.

“We’re also looking forward to hosting the International Rugby Sevens sometime in the future,” she said.
