Flights cancellations increase as Russian war intensifies

Forwardkeys latest data shows that there has been a rise in the cancellation of flights to and from Russia as the war against Ukraine intensifies. After the invasion against Ukraine began on Feb.25th, six cancellations of pre-existing bookings are done against every new booking. Germany, France, Italy, the UK, India and Turkey. The Russian outbound tourism also suffered in this period. Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey, the UK, Armenia, and Maldives are the countries which has suffered due to this war.

In the three months of March, April and May 32% Russian outbound flight bookings to places like Mexico, Seychelles, Egypt and the Maldives were very popular destinations amongst the Russian tourists. In the months of July and August flight bookings were much stronger at 46% of the 2019 levels.


Russians represents a very high percentage of tourists in Seychelles, Maldives and Cyprus. Thus the decline of Russian tourists will have damaging consequences on their tourism-dependent economies. Armenia, where Russians account for 47% of all visitors, Azerbaijan 44%, Uzbekistan 34%, Bulgaria 18%, the Seychelles 16%, the Maldives 15% and Cyprus 13%.


Russian tourists in March, April and May were seeking to travel to Turkey, the UAE, the Maldives, Thailand, Greece, Egypt, Cyprus, Armenia, the Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Hungary, Bulgaria, Mexico, Spain, Azerbaijan, USA, UK, Qatar, Italy and Uzbekistan. After the slowdown of international air travel, domestic air travel that was in a strong recovery , immediately stalled. While till 23rd February, Russian domestic flight bookings for March, April and May were 25% ahead of pre-pandemic levels. But new bookings fell 77%, analyzed on a week-on-week basis.


Olivier Ponti the VP Insights of ForwardKeys stated that war has always a damaging impact on the travel industry. He said that Russian tourism economy was trying to bounce back from the pandemic but would face another substantial blow. Places that depend on Russian tourism will face serious impacts. He further stated that he hopes cease fire and successful peace talks are conducted between the belligerent parties.
