Flights from Gatwick Airport were kept suspended in the morning after drones were sighted over the airfield late last night.
The disruption takes significance on account of festive season knocking at the doors. The Gatwick Airport is expecting to welcome 2.9 million passengers.
Airport released the statement: “Flights to and from Gatwick Airport remain suspended following reports of drones flying over Gatwick’s airfield last night and in the early hours of this morning. We are advising passengers scheduled to fly from Gatwick not to travel to the airport without checking the status of their flight with their airline this morning.”
Inconvenience is apologized but the safety of all passengers and staff has been prioritized.
Earlier the flights were suspended on Wednesday evening after two drones were seen nearby.
The suspension of flights led to a series of delays and diversions. Arriving flights landed in Paris and Amsterdam.
The matter is in under investigation as the police searches for the operator of drones.
About 200 flights have been affected so far, covering 10,000 passengers.
In the UK, it is illegal to fly a drone within one kilometre of an airport or airfield.
European air traffic management group Eurocontrol said it expected the runway would remain closed until the early morning.
