IndiGo, India’s largest airline, introduces the Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR) flight procedure for its operations into Kathmandu. IndiGo successfully conducted the validation flight today after receiving clearance and provisional approval from DGCA. This technological advancement marks a significant step in aviation safety and efficiency, allowing pilots to navigate the challenging terrain surrounding Kathmandu Valley with precision.
Designed for airports in geographically complex and high-altitude regions like Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), RNP AR technology enhances operational precision. With the airport encircled by the Himalayas, landing has historically been difficult, especially in poor weather conditions. The RNP AR system now enables aircraft to follow predetermined flight paths with exceptional accuracy, reducing the risks posed by the mountainous terrain.
IndiGo’s implementation of the RNP AR procedure for all Kathmandu flights will greatly improve passenger safety. This advanced navigation capability facilitates continuous descent approaches, optimizing airspace, reducing fuel consumption, and lowering emissions.
Capt. Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations at IndiGo, stated, “We are proud to be the first Indian airline to implement the RNP AR procedure in Kathmandu. By doing so, IndiGo reinforces its commitment to aviation safety and operational efficiency, ensuring safer and more reliable skies for all travelers. This latest advancement reflects IndiGo’s dedication to providing exceptional service as we continue expanding our network.”
The new RNP AR procedures at Kathmandu Airport offer airlines several strategic benefits:
