COVID-19 had impacted tourism badly. Then delta variant upset the sector. Now it’s the turn for Hurricane Ida to put that last nail in the coffin.

Louisiana tourism just can’t catch a break.

As several sectors have found their ways to bounce back amid the pandemic, tourism and hospitality is constantly struggling like hell.

A hurricane like Ida on top of that makes life even tougher for some sections of Louisiana to get back on its feet like before.

To quote Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, “It’s going to be devastating to the tourism industry. The ones that fall through the cracks are the small businesses in the tourism industry.”

Nungesser said that hotels are doing pretty well in the short term. Hotels are full of evacuees and emergency workers helping the city and the southeastern part of Louisiana in getting back on its feet.

He is quite hopeful that visitors will start eating at local “mom-and-pop restaurants to help keep them alive.”
“All the shops and the jazz musicians in the Quarter, all the fairs and festivals in those regions — it’s another year without any income,” Nungesser said. “It’s really going to be devastating. And usually during a hurricane, the whole country comes to help us.”

Nungesser also mentioned that between the pandemic and natural disasters, it’s not just that his state alone is suffering.

“With the fires in California, it’s not just Louisiana having devastation anymore so it’s going to be on the shoulders of Lousianans to pick ourselves up,” he said.

“We’re going to have to get creative and help bring this economy back.”
