In the category of Best of Planet, destinations having the label of Slovenia Green Destination as well as Ljubljana and Podčetrtek as Slovenia Green Destination Gold were awarded “Best in Europe”.

With this award, Slovenia positioned among the top 10 most prestigious destinations in the World’s Top 10 Sustainable Destinations 2018 category.

The award show was planned and arranged by Green Destinations, TravelMole, ITB Berlin and ten another eminent global organizations and networks in sustainable tourism, as they wanted to emphasize winning stories, exchange best practices, and make an effort to upgrade tourism along with its improvement. This way, they support individual destinations to be even more committed toward sustainability.

The Slovenian Tourist Board designed the strategic guidelines in terms of green tourism in 2009 and 2010 and made it to be its main goal to turn Slovenia one of the most sustainable countries in the world. At the initial Days of Slovenian Tourism in 2011, the Declaration on the Partnership for Sustainable Development jointly with different stakeholders was signed, committing themselves to take the responsibility for a competitive and sustainable development of Slovenian tourism.

Also, the 2012–2016 Slovenian Tourism Development Strategy was based on the ideology of sustainable development. However, the Slovenian Tourist Board described that for Slovenia, its sustainable focus is the sole true development opportunity and its tourist offers. Also, it simultaneously highlighted its dedication to the sustainable development of tourism at 2017’s Days of Slovenian Tourism by signing the Declaration on the Partnership for the Sustainable Development of Tourism, which is at the same level with the 2017–2021 Strategy for the Sustainable Growth of Slovenian Tourism.
