Foreign tourists have been asked to stay away from visiting Myanmar after there were plans to open up the country in spite of the widespread ongoing rights abuses and violence including kidnappings and killings by the military, along with food shortages and regular blackouts.
More than a year after grabbing power and overthrowingAung San SuuKyi, Myanmar’s military has announced for reopening for tourism and restarting international flights on 17 April.
Michael Isherwood, chair of the Burma Humanitarian Mission and program director of charity Backpack Medics said,“I would not suggest anyone travels there. If Burma reopens to tourists, it’s primarily to benefit the junta.”
When there were thoughts about reopening late last year, Tin TunNaing, the minister for planning, finance and investment for Myanmar’s ousted National Unity Government said that wasn’t a time for sightseeing, urging people not to visit.
