When the Formula One event commences in Singapore this week as part of the Singapore F1 Grand Prix from September 30 to October 2, it will hint at Singapore’s strong rebound as a host of top-notch events after the COVID-19 pandemic bringing its tourism industry to a complete halt.
Crowds from all over the world are expected to visit the city-state in numbers not witnessed since the first Singapore GP in 2008 when a sell-out crowd of 300,000 was present at the event. Since then, a visitor number of 268,000 were seen in 2019. COVID-19 brought the world’s only street circuit night race to a complete halt in 2020 and 2021.
It is projected that around 40 per cent of the audiences at the Grand Prix are foreigners; many are also expected to be from India.
Presently, Indians comprise the second largest group of visitors to Singapore considering the country of origin. Till August, Singapore witnessed a total of 2.96 million visitors. Of these, 378,490 were from India. At 588,870, Indonesia became the largest source of foreign visitors to Singapore till August. Malaysia grabbed the third place with 264,170, followed by Australia (258,670) and Vietnam (177,510).
July and August, witnessed around 725,000 foreigners visiting Singapore every month, which is the highest up to now this year. With this speed and if global travel picks up, Singapore expects to reach about 6 million visitors by this year end.
