Four accommodation companies & 7 tour operators support UNWTO Global Tourism Plastic Initiative

The names of the recent signatories have been disclosed side by side with the introduction of the first annual report which summarizes the development made in curbing plastic pollution in tourism in the last few years.

Four accommodation companies like Alila Villas Uluwatu, Sudima Hotels, Phaea Resorts, JJ’s Hostel Mirissa are the new members along with seven tour operators – Adventuretects LLC, Evaneos, Secret Scotland Tours, Europamundo, SEE Turtles, Travel.Bhutan and Turama Pacific Travel.

In the meantime, Club Med, Accor, Hong-Kong Shanghai Hotels, Iberostar, Melco and Six Senses have all mentioned about constant initiations to execute their commitments to manage pollution related to plastic.

In 2020, they have got rid of around 108 million plastic items, almost 804 metric tons.

To quote Zurab Plololikashvili, UNWTO General Secretary, “In just one year, the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative has made a real impact. Together, signatories have cut their use of plastic by 800metric tons, equivalent to 27 large shipping containers full of plastic.”
