Four dead after two avalanches struck the Italian Alps

Over the weekend at least four people were killed after two avalanches struck the Italian Alps. At an altitude of 2,700 meters around 11 a.m local time on Sunday a 28-year old died after an avalanche in the Brenta Dolomite mountains.

 

With three others the man had been making his way up a gully when the avalanche hit.  In the incident a second skier was caught up in the incident and was injured and transported to a hospital in Trento.

 

The names of the four individuals have not been released.

 

At the Val Senales glacier in South Tyrol, a  province in northern Italy near the Australian border a Guardia di Finanza source said that earlier on Saturday, a woman and two children died after an avalanche struck a ski slope.

 

On Saturday at around midday the avalanche happened and officials from the Finance Police took over the scene. They were assisted from three helicopters and dog units specialized in avalanche search and rescue.

 

 

Under the snow the bodies of a 35 years old woman and a 7 years old girl was seen buried according to sources which added that another 7-year-old girl dies while enroute to Santa Chiara hospital in Trento by helicopter.

 

 

The three victims were Germans and were regular skiers. Two skiers are known to have received minor injuries and two more were rescued from under the snow.

 

 

An investigation has been opened in Magistrates in Trento and was headed to the accident scene, after surveying the site they will assess if appropriate security measures were in place on the ski slopes.
