A Lufthansa Boeing 747 plane that was bound for Frankfurt, Germany, from Newark International Airport, was forced to turn around and make an unscheduled landing in Boston Monday night after smoke was reported in the cockpit.
According to online flight records, Lufthansa Flight 403 departed Newark Metropolitan Airport and later Newark International Airport, an international airport straddling the boundary between the cities of Newark in Essex County and Elizabeth in Union County, New Jersey, just after 8:15 p.m. and was just west of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, when the aircraft turned around and headed toward Boston’s Logan International Airport.
A spokesperson for Massachusetts State Police said the crew utilized oxygen masks as the plane diverted to Boston. There were 326 people on board, according to state police. There were no reports of injuries. A spokesperson for Lufthansa Airlines was not immediately available for comment.
